1. CIHR at a Glance
a) Quench your scientific thirst
CIHR is helping to make the latest health and science research accessible to the general public. Café Scientifiques bring together researchers and the general public in informal venues (such as restaurants, pubs or cafés) for an evening of lively and informative discussion. CIHR and some of its Institutes have already hosted Cafés dealing with health subjects such as obesity, healthy aging, Edmonton housing, the positives and negatives of personalized medicine, the hazards of urban living, and the effects of air pollution on citizens in Toronto. We are currently hosting a series of Cafés on mental health in conjunction with the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). You can learn more about this series in an enlightening Q&A (http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/40201.html) with CIHR-IHSPR Scientific Director Colleen Flood and the Honourable Michael Kirby, Chair of the MHCC.

The Accounting Office would like to officially welcome Deidre Smith as the Finance Officer, Research Accounting. Deidre has her BBA and public administration certificate from UPEI and an accounting designation (CMA). She started in the Accounting Office on Wednesday, November 4 and can be reached at dasmith@upei.ca or 566-0456. She is currently situated
in the Accounting Office but will be moving in the next few weeks to Room 232 on the 2nd floor of Kelley which is amongst the cluster of ORD offices.
Deidre's main role will be to manage the Research Accounting unit – the staff, the workload, and the internal and external relationships. She will also assist in the strategic management of the Accounting Office and act as Manager in the absence of Allan Hughes, Manager, Accounting Office.
The new position of Finance Officer came about as the result of a reorganization of the Research Accounting unit after the long-serving Supervisor of Research Accounting, Lynda Walker-Birt, was the successful applicant for a new financial position on campus. This departure of “the guru of research accounting on campus” prompted an analysis of the current and future needs for the administration of research funds. The unit is now led by Deidre with the capable support of Velda Ward and Click Stewart.
Best wishes to both Lynda and Deidre in their new roles.

Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program
The Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP) is a five-year (2009-2014), $163 million Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) initiative. This federal program encourages farmers, processors, distributors, and retailers to work together to find innovative solutions to common concerns and to explore new market opportunities.
CAAP’s objective is to help the agricultural sector adapt and remain competitive. Eligible projects could be in the areas of traceability, environment, climate change, capacity development, pests and diseases, and more.
There are national, regional, and multi-regional components of the program. In situations where more than one province or territory shares the same priority, projects may be considered under the collective outcomes umbrella. Increasing collaboration and forming new alliances throughout the sector are key to future successes.
Application
Project proposals must meet program principles and criteria. Eligible recipients may include industry organizations and associations , cooperatives, marketing boards, aboriginal groups, for-profit companies and individual producers.
National proposals
For project proposals that address issues having a national impact, the national CAAP application form is available on the AAFC website (http://www.agr.gc.ca).
Regional or Multi-regional proposals
On behalf of AAFC, Industry Councils across Canada deliver CAAP regionally. This grassroots delivery provides greater responsibility and accountability to industry in responding to the needs and issues of the local agriculture and agri-food industry. For project proposals that are regional or multi-regional (collective outcomes) in scope, contact the Industry Council for your province or territory.
