Research Ethics Board

NEW

  • Guidelines for Masters and Honours Students

Guidelines were drawn up so as to ensure consistency through Departments at UPEI. Students/Supervisors are required to follow these guidelines for the approval process. All Honours students who require ethical approval are required to complete a Departmental review prior to submitting the application to the REB. Masters students are required to have their full Thesis Review Committee sign the Confirmation of Supervisor’s Review form prior to submission. Masters Students will no longer be required to receive Departmental approval prior to submission. An exception to the rule exists for Honours Students where at least two members of the Departmental Level review are also on the University REB. In this case students need only submit to the Departmental level review. Currently only the Department of Psychology satisfies this condition.

  • On-line Tutorial for Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS) for Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans Required

All researchers completing research including human participants will now be required to complete the on line TCPS tutorial and submit a copy of their certificate with the application to the REB. Researchers who do not submit their certificate will receive a conditional acceptance until they have completed the TCPS online tutorial and submit a copy to ORD.

The UPEI Research Ethics Board manages the approval and  monitor process for the use of humans in research at UPEI.  All research involving humans conducted by faculty, staff or students at UPEI must be approved by the appropriate review board.

  • As of January 1, 2009, the Research Ethics Board will be implementing a submission deadline for Applications for Ethics Review for minimal risk proposals.  Submissions of the original Application plus 2 copies will be required by January 8 in order to be reviewed at the January 29 meeting.  A complete schedule of submission deadlines for 2009 can be found here.
  • Honours students who are conducting human subject reserach for their thesis work must submist their project for ethics review prior to undertaking their research.  This review is carried out initially by the Departmental Level Ethics Review Committee.  Graduate student research must be reviewed by the Thesis committee and signed by all members prior to submission to the REB.  Once approved, submit the certificate of approval from your department with the application and the Confirmation of Supervisor's Review Form found here.

  • To help the environment, please double-side all future submissions to the UPEI REB.  Please also ensure that ALL submissions are properly collated and stapled before submission.

  • Multi-Site review - submission guidelines for multi-site review have been updated and can be found here
