Invitation to meet Dr. William Montelpare

Donor funding to support the funded Chair in Human Development and Health has been finalized and an announcement will soon be made to introduce Dr. William (Bill) Montelpare as the new Margaret and Wallace McCain Chair in Human Development and Health.  Dr. Montelpare will begin his position on July 1, 2012; however, he will be visiting campus several times prior to that. His first visit is Monday, December 19.

At 1:00 pm (Monday, December 19) in Room 142 Andrew Hall, you will have an opportunity to meet Dr. Montelpare and participate in a round table discussion regarding research interests.

Dr. Montelpare completed his PhD from the University of Toronto in Community Health, specializing in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Exercises Science. He was the first director of the Health Studies Program at Brock University, and was later appointed as director of the School of Kinesiology at Lakehead University. There, Dr. Montelpare worked with colleagues in Nursing and Professional Studies to create the first Masters in Public Health (MPH) program in Canada.

As the Margaret and Wallace McCain Chair in Human Development and Health, Dr. Montelpare’s programs of research will be directed toward issues in public health and issues in exercise  science, with a specific focus on injury prevention in sport and recreational pursuits, as well as promoting daily quality physical activity, balanced energy consumption, and avoiding tobacco exposure.

Dr. Montelpare’s research is ongoing in the areas of evaluation of maternal/neonatal and child health with a specific emphasis on health in the early years (ages 1-5). A major research focus includes health promotion through the delivery of health science education in the elementary school  classroom, as well as the development of web-based applications for data capture, data analysis, and dissemination of findings leading to the development of approaches for health surveillance as well as for the development of online delivery of curriculum.

Please let me know if you are able to join Dr. Montelpare in the round table discussion.  Please contact Donna Lawless dlawless@upei.ca or call 628-4308 to confirm your attendance.
